Abstract
► Parasites in gut visual inspections usually are used to predict parasites in flesh. ► We study statistical significance between parasites in gut and flesh of 552 fishes. ► No statistical significance exists in almost any case at the fish species studied. ► Gut visual inspection is an unreliable method to predict parasites in flesh of fish. ► HACCP programmes should be reviewed to improve the risk of anisakid-induced disease.
