Abstract
⺠River water used for irrigation in KwaZulu-Natal was analyzed microbiologically. ⺠Hygiene indicators were quantified in river water samples and on irrigated produce. ⺠Fecal coliforms in river water exceeded WHO guideline values for safe irrigation. ⺠The river water is therefore not suitable for irrigation. ⺠A transfer of bacteria from irrigation water onto produce might take place.
