Abstract
Giving a correct name to a strain is an important step in biological research. A correct name is vital for optimal communication, and is often the link between various studies. Several names of commonly known food associated fungi changed in the last decade due to the changes in the nomenclatural rules, new insights in the classification and the description of new species. These changes might cause confusing to the end user, certainly when the new binomial differs from the old name (e.g. Eurotium amstelodami is a synonym of Aspergillus montevidensis). In this overview paper we address the current issues in the taxonomy and identification of foodborne fungi. An overview of the old and the current names of the most important food-borne fungi is given.
