Spatial Modeling: Suburban Leisure in Shanghai

This study introduces the “recreational belt around metropolis” concept in order to examine the spatial patterns of urban residents’ leisure travel to suburban areas and of the recreation and tourism development in these areas. Using the case of Shanghai, China, and applying the concepts of a tourism matrix, the study identified the growth of domestic demand, policy-driven supply, and transportation networks as the three determinants underlying the formation of the patterns. A spatial interaction model reflecting the concept of distance decay and land lease rates is constructed. The paper concludes with a discussion on the research and practical implications of the findings.

RésuméModélisation spatiale: loisirs suburbains à Shanghai. Cette étude présente le concept de la «banlieue des loisirs» afin d’examiner les modèles spatiaux des excursions en banlieue par les habitants des villes et du développement des loisirs et du tourisme dans ces régions. En utilisant le cas de Shanghai (Chine) et en appliquant les concepts d’une matrice de tourisme, l’étude a identifié la croissance de la demande intérieure, l’offre déterminé par la politique et les réseaux de transports comme les trois déterminants sous-jacents de la formation des modèles.On construit un modèle de l’interaction spatiale qui réfléchit le concept du déclin distancié et les taux de bail foncier. L’article se termine par une discussion de la recherche et des implications pratiques des résultats.
