Perceptual and not physical eye contact elicits pupillary dilation

► We found that humans do not correctly detect others' gaze direction toward own face. ► The pupillary dilation is caused not when actual gaze congruency is established. ► However the dilation is caused when a consciousness for others' gaze is activated. ► An eye contact often involves one-way communication.
