The arguments necessary for the discussion and the different reasoning steps were characterized and formalized in order to constitute a decision making tool. The importance of timing, of collegial discussion and of the information needed by the referent nephrologist to make a decision, are all emphasized in the tool. The initial draft was refined while being applied. Having been designed to favour discussion, it serves as a reasoning plan for decision-making that takes into account most of the elements that interfere with the situation being analysed. The review of the tool's inputs and also of its failures renders more dynamic its development and the workgroup's functioning.
