Receiver perception predicts species divergence in long-range communication

► I studied the long-range visual displays that male Caribbean Anolis lizards use to advertise territory ownership. ► Motion detection capabilities and environmental conditions predicted the types of movements in displays. ► Motion detection of Anolis receivers also predicted movements in advertisement displays of closely related species. ► These results illustrate how the receiver's sensory system sets the minimum requirements for an effective signal.
