Los dioses no entienden las metáforas: realidad y representación en Mesoamérica

ResumenAtendiendo a las discusiones que recientemente se han suscitado entre la antropología mesoamericanista y las de corte ontologista, el presente trabajo ilustra las problemáticas que implica el tratamiento superficial de la noción de realidad en el discurso de nuestros sujetos de estudio. A través de la revisión crítica de algunas de las propuestas que han tenido mayor impacto en nuestra región de estudio, se muestra que las diferentes maneras en que concebimos la realidad inciden directamente en las relaciones que establecemos con la alteridad. Y, por el contraste entre distintas perspectivas disciplinarias, se describen las dificultades que implica aproximarse a lo que alguien más puede o no considerar como real. Se recurre, por último, a variados ejemplos históricos y etnográficos para subrayar la importancia que, desde la perspectiva indígena, puede tener la distinción entre realidad y representación.

Addressing recent debates that have arisen between Mesoamericanist anthropology and those of an ontological nature, the present work illustrates the issues implied by the superficial treatment of the notion of reality in the discourse of our subjects of study. Through a critical review of some of the proposals that have had the greatest impact in our region of study, it becomes clear that the different in which that we conceive reality directly impinge upon the relations that we establish with alterity. Contrasting perspectives offered by different disciplines, it is possible to determine what someone might or might not regard as real, leading to a more profound and perhaps more accurate understanding of other cultural experiences and narratives. Finally, several historical and ethnographic cases are examined to underscore the importance of the distinction between reality and representation to truly grasp the indigenous perspective.
