Creating a state-of-the-art center for fetal diagnosis and treatment: Importance of a multidisciplinary approach

Prenatal diagnosis has become increasingly sophisticated fueled by technologic advances which enhance the range of diagnostic capabilities. Pre- and postnatal interventions have developed from an expanded understanding of the natural history and pathophysiology of structural anomalies and the ability to prenatally diagnose a birth defect with greater accuracy. Congenital anomalies, heart defects being the most common, now surpass prematurity as the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, but are still rare. Thus, the complex, unusual, and unique needs of abnormal fetuses and their families are best served in specialized centers with focused expertise, and access to on-site multidisciplinary subspecialties with extensive clinical experience. In this article, we will discuss the creation of a state-of-the-art Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment based upon our experience at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
