Clinical relevance, verification of systemic connection and management - Report of two cases of maxillary and mandibular double lip

Double lip, an occasional oral anomaly that may be congenital or acquired, unilateral or bilateral, involving single or both lips, comprises a fold of redundant hypertrophic tissue on mucosal side of lip. Condition often induces difficulty in chewing, discomfort, speech or esthetic problems. It may be present as an isolated anomaly, with thyroid dysfunction or as a component of Ascher's syndrome. Surgical intervention often required for functional and cosmetic corrections. Double lip is of special concern in dentistry since dental practitioner is often first professional to detect and diagnose this exceptional condition. Presently, two cases - congenital maxillary double lip and acquired mandibular double lip, clinical relevance, verification of systemic connection, differential diagnosis and management are discussed.
