ObjectivesTo understand the unique characteristics of unicystic ameloblastoma and its response to various treatment procedures and propose decompression as an initial procedure for its treatment.Patients and methods5 patients (4 males and 1 female), aged between 8 years and 70 years diagnosed clinically and histologically as unicystic ameloblastoma were treated by decompression. In one case lesion spontaneously resolved completely and for other 4 patients a second procedure was planned to enucleate the remaining lesion. Patients were kept on periodic follow up.ResultsIn all 5 patients the lesion responded favorably to the treatment with decrease in size of cystic cavity in 4 patients observed in 4 cases on periodic follow up. In Case 1, there was recurrence of the lesion after 5.2 yrs. The same protocol of decompression followed by enucleation was carried out again. Patient is without recurrence subsequently at seventh month follow up.ConclusionThe results show that the lesion responds favorably to the decompression procedure, presenting an enticing option to decrease the morbidity associated with aggressive surgical procedures.
