Exogenous lipoid pneumonia is generally unrecognized clinically. Typical radiological patterns such as low (fat) attenuation in a condensation or a mass, associated with a positive history of oil inhalation or other source of lipoid consumption, may provide the diagnosis. Diagnosis is particularly important in the event of a chronic disease in order to avoid bronchoalveolar lavage or transthoracic, transbronchial or surgical lung biopsy.
