Premedication and management of concomitant therapy

Preparation of patients for elective or urgent surgery is an important surgical skill. Decisions regarding appropriate premedication and the management of concomitant drug therapies can be challenging. Patients who are inappropriately prepared for surgery may have their procedure cancelled at short notice resulting in increased patient anxiety, inefficient resource utilization and financial penalties for hospitals. This article provides an update on premedication and concomitant therapy management in preparation for surgery, drawing on advice from the latest clinical guidelines and most recent evidence.
