► OTA raised Spi− mutant frequency in the kidneys of p53-deficient gpt delta mice. ► OTA induced significant increase of p53 protein levels in the kidneys of mice. ► A lack of p53 elevated incidences of apoptosis and karyomegaly in renal tubules. ► OTA-induced phenomenon may arise from DNA damage.
