► Psammophilic plant species are highly mycorrhiza dependent. ► Growth benefits of mycorrhization of psammophilic plants are important in low fertility soils. ► Thymbra capitata and Halimium halimifolium do not develop in absence of AMF. ► The lack of AM colonization can explain the limited plant growth recorded in nurseries.
