► Extramatrical mycelia of ectomycorrhizal fungi are potentially large C sinks in soil. ► I review the spatial and temporal scales over which they moderate carbon dynamics. ► Some components of extramatrical mycelia probably turn over within a few weeks. ► The influence of future climate change on these processes is also considered.
