Ostre zapalenie trzustki w przebiegu leczenia padaczki kwasem walproinowym u dwojga dzieci

Valproic acid, frequently used in the treatment of epilepsy, may be one of the causes of acute pancreatitis in children. In our work we have described acute pancreatitis in a 5-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy who were treated with valproic acid. The girl, with infant cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, retarded development and epilepsy had been treated with valproic acid for four years. The boy had been treated with valproic acid for three months due to numbness episodes and unspecific pathological changes in EEG. Moreover, the boy had a history of atopic dermatitis in infancy and in the recent days the rash was present on the skin of the chest and lower extremities. In both cases the course of acute pancreatitis was mild and the clinical symptoms as well as laboratory findings subsided after discontinuation of the drug and correction of electrolyte disturbances.
