Impact of microalgal feed supplementation on omega-3 fatty acid enrichment of hen eggs

► Nannochloropsis gaditana offers an alternative for current n-3 LC-PUFA sources to enrich eggs. ► Microalgal EPA hardly accumulates in yolk lipids, but largely convertes to DHA before deposited in yolk phospholipids. ► The efficiency of deposition of n-3 LC-PUFA from N. gaditana to eggs is rather low. ► The DHA enrichment in eggs disappears when hens are switched back to standard feed, devoid of microalgae. ► Nannochloropsis shifts egg yolk color from yellow to more orange-red.
