Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is considered as an effective means in healing micro-defects inside the superalloy. However, can HIP effectively heal macro defect? Here we design a sealed cavity inside the superalloy to simulate the millimeter-sized cavity defect and focus on its healing behavior by HIP. Results show that HIP has the potential to heal the millimeter-scale cavity and the main mechanism is diffusion based on the features of diffusion zone and honeycomb structure during healing process. This exploratory work helps to better understand and broaden the applications of HIP and make the manufacturing sustainable.
