Luminescent copper(I) complexes with halogenido-bridged dimeric core

• The copper(I) complexes containing halogenido-bridged {Cu2X2} core are luminescent at room temperature in the solid state with various N- and P-coordinating ligands.
• The energy of ML/XL CT type emission can cover whole visible region by the selection of π* level of ligands.
• The emission from the intra-ligand state can also be observed when it exists as a sufficiently low energy state.
• The {Cu2X2} complexes with large quantum yields tend to show the emission maximum at around 490–550 nm.

Neutral halogenido copper(I) units {CunXn} are widely found in the luminescent copper(I) complexes. In this review, we describe the luminescent properties of complexes with the halogenido-bridged dimeric core, {Cu2(μ-X)2}, which is one of the basic structural motifs of {CunXn}, as well as their synthetic methods and structural features. The available emissive excited states and their approximate energies are discussed by comparing the emission energies among the complexes with different ligand combinations. The trend of the quantum yields in the {Cu2X2} complexes will also be discussed.
