• Maraging steel 3J33 phase transformation in micro-grinding is investigated.
• Effective wheel revolution (EWR) for internal micro-grinding is proposed.
• EWR>683, the summation of variation phase volume fractions is less than 25%.
• No significant difference of roughness between moderate and super-high rotation speed.
• Moderate wheel rotation speed is the most appropriate choice for micro-grinding.
Phase transformation could occur during micro-grinding, and problems of severe accuracy limitation and deformation remain in fabrication of small-sized features. In this paper, the phase transformation distribution in micro-grinding of maraging steel 3J33 was investigated. Phase transformation was identified via X-ray diffraction analysis by comparison with known data from the changes of both peak appearance and intensity. The effective wheel revolution for internal micro-grinding was proposed to clarify the effects of relevant parameters on phase transformation. Based on phase transformation and surface roughness analyses, some suggestions are provided on the combination range of process parameters.
