Porous Tantalum scaffolds were prepared by applying the sponge impregnation technique and the powder metallurgy technique (P/M). Pore structure and morphology of the porous scaffolds were evaluated by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results revealed that the porosity of the porous scaffolds was 66.7% and the pore sizes were in the range of 300–600 μm, showing interconnected three-dimension (3D) network open cell structure. The compressive strength and the modulus of the scaffolds were 61.5±4.5 MPa and 2.21±0.16 GPa, respectively. The biocompatibility results show that the porous Tantalum foam scaffolds can significantly promote the proliferation of rat osteoblasts and the materials were not toxic.
► A desirable pore size and porosity porous Tantalum are sucessfully prepared.
► A desirable compressive strength and modulus of the porous Tantalum are achieved.
► The porous Tantalum scaffolds can promote adhesion and proliferation of osteoblast.
