A new type of ultrahigh vacuum apparatus for detecting hydrogen desorption from metals during deformation was developed. The apparatus consists of a high-vacuum chamber, a specimen exchange unit, an internal loading system and a detecting system. The loading system with a corrugated pipe is designed to avoid mechanical stimulated outgassing caused by the friction between the loading rod and the sealing ring. The four-stage vacuum pump system is applied to keep the vacuum of the apparatus down to 10−9 Pa. This apparatus can be used to measure hydrogen desorption from a specimen during deformation. The relationship between the microstructure and the hydrogen transport behavior can be revealed by this method. As an example of the application of the apparatus, hydrogen desorption of hydrogen-charged type 304 and 310S stainless steels during deformation has been investigated and the hydrogen transport behavior is discussed.
