Gelatin derivative was prepared to coating titanium surface and photo-immobilize rhBMP-2 for improved osteoinduction and function. The conjugation was confirmed by 31P and 1H NMR. Photo-immobilization of the azide–phosphonate–gelatin (Az–P–Gel) was evaluated by micropatterning. The rate of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP-2) release was evaluated for performance of Az–P–Gel as a carrier. The water contact angle was determined to characterize Ti surface coated with Az–P–Gel. Ability to induce osteogenesis of Az–P–Gel was evaluated using alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay, Alizarin Red S staining, and calcium colorimetric assay. Our results demonstrate that Ti modified with Az–P–Gel and rhBMP-2 facilitates bone regeneration.
