Modelling and visualizing morphology in the fungus Alternaria

► A statistical model was developed for the 3D sporulation apparatus of Alternaria. ► The model was inspired by a grammar-based model for plants, the Lindenmayer-system. ► Adjusting the probability parameters for each character yields variations in models. ► Varied models can then be fit to actual image data using statistical inference. ► This will allow for automated morphometrics and species id from microscopy images.
