Analysis of the Possibility to Implement ZigBee Communications in Road Junctions

The communication network stands as the backbone of modern transport systems and is responsible for fast and reliable information transfer between connected devices, especially in critical applications. Data collection, information transfer, information services are all based on communication technologies. Consequently, the communication quality of service (QoS) becomes crucial. In highly radio congested environment, such as dense urban areas (and especially in road junctions), the implementation and fine tuning of the communication system presents usually a certain degree of difficulty, taking into account interferences, reflections etc.. The location of antennas, radio channels, signal propagation and the transmission protocols must be optimised in order to determine the best communication network setup, inducing higher QoS. When developing communication systems designed to work in urban areas, different solutions must be chosen, depending on the specific environment. In this paper a first analysis is done for determining an optimal communication set-up solution, by comparing different signal modulation types and error rates, having in mind the test of using ZigBee protocol. Charts were plotted in order to reveal the error rate dependency against signal-to-noise ratio of the modulated signals.
