A short approach to trisubstituted γ-butyrolactones

The dihydroxylation of unsaturated aldol adducts with catalytic OsO4 and NMO occurs under very mild conditions and with moderate to excellent levels of diastereoselectivity to give trisubstituted γ-butyrolactone derivatives.
