A new type of boronic acid fluorescent reporter compound for sugar recognition

5-Quinolineboronic acid was found to be a new type of fluorescent reporter for carbohydrate recognition and show a pKa-switching between the quinolinium and boronic acid groups upon binding a diol in aqueous solution.
