► Assessment of toxic potential of tungsten carbide-based nanoparticles. ► Evaluation of ROS and micronuclei induction of three hard metal nanomaterials. ► Dependency of observed toxic effects on the materials physical-chemical properties. ► Differences in several particle properties seem to modulate the biological response.
