Prolonged exposure to NMDAR antagonist induces cell-type specific changes of glutamatergic receptors in rat prefrontal cortex

► Glutamatergic receptors in the prefrontal neurons in MK-801 model were investigated. ► MK-801 induced distinct changes in AMPA and NMDAR receptors in FS interneurons. ► New presynaptic NMDARs were inserted in terminals targeting pyramidal neurons. ► These data provide a mechanistic explanation for the NMDA hypofunction hypothesis.
