Dye release behavior from polyvinyl alcohol films in a hydro-alcoholic medium: Influence of physicochemical heterogeneity

► The release of a dye from PVOH films in hydro-alcoholic medium was described. ► Physicochemical differences of the polymer matrix influenced the release kinetics. ► Molecular weight and degree of hydrolysis played a key role on the release properties. ► Due to its non-solvent behavior, ethanol hindered the release process. ► Tailored controlled release patterns were achieved.
