PBDEs as indicator chemicals of urbanization along an urban/rural gradient in South China

► Sediment PBDEs exhibited a positive association with catchment's urbanization level. ► Similar to “urban heat island effect”, an “urban pollution island effect” was observed. ► PBDEs can be used as indicator chemicals of urbanization process in this region.
