This paper describes results for a heating/cooling rate, dT/dt (°C/s) sensor developed for transient heat conduction, material sciences and health-management studies as well as for signal discrimination. The heating/cooling rate is a natural property for determining transient, heat fluxes, q″ (W/m2). This paper (i) describes the voltage-rate interface and its subsequent conversion to heating rate; and, (ii) presents experimental results indicating the merit and accuracy of the concept through a heat transfer experiment. Finally, it is demonstrated that a rate measurement has the additional benefit of amplifying small imperfections. This is illustrated when investigating the electrical signal generated by a thermocouple that is constructed with two junctions.
