► Bimetallic Ni-Fe catalysts were prepared for total-methanation process, showing excellent catalytic performance. ► High activity of Ni-Fe catalysts was attributed to the quality of Ni-Fe alloy. ► Silicon content in catalyst support as an impurity played a negative role in CH4 selectivity.
