XAFS characterization of mercury captured on cupric chloride-impregnated sorbents

► Little or no elemental mercury was found from raw, CuCl2-, and HCl-doped AC sorbents. ► HgCl2 is formed as a result of the reaction between Hg(0) vapor and CuCl2. ► HgS is likely to be formed when Hg(0) vapor is adsorbed onto Norit DARCO-HG.
