Multi-objective optimisation for generating sustainable solutions considering total effects on the environment

► Two approaches considering total effects on the environment are presented. ► The relative direct sustainability index is replaced by total sustainability index. ► The concept of eco-cost is replaced by novel concept of eco-profit. ► Considering total effects enables obtaining of more realistic solutions. ► Production of biogas is an economically and environmentally attractive solution.
