► We analyse polymer degradation of dilute solutions of PEO and PAM. ► We use a cylindrical double gap rheometer device. ► We analyse the effects of many parameters on drag reduction as a function of time. ► We focus are analysis on the very beginning of the problem. ► We propose an equation which can be used to fit the relative drag reduction data.
