Fair optimization of fortnightly physician schedules with flexible shifts

► We developed a reduced set covering formulation to solve the flexible shift scheduling problem of physicians in hospitals. ► Computational results with real-world data show the efficiency of the reduced set covering formulation. ► Physician preferences and fairness aspects are integrated into the scheduling model. ► The numerical study shows that the solution space contains cost minimizing schedules that are fairness maximizing as well.
