Evaluation of mar/scratch resistance of a two component automotive clear coat via nano-indenter

Nano-indenter as a technique for characterization and evaluation of mar/scratch resistance of a two component automotive clear coat is used. Different responses of the coatings to the marring stress and critical forces are discussed. The plastic deformation compared to the elastic part and the damage width is decreased by adding nano-silica in the coatings formulation.
