Comparing simulations of three conceptually different forest models with National Forest Inventory data

► We compare simulations by a BGC model, a gap model and an empirical growth model. ► The comparison is based on the current annual volume increment for 1987-2001. ► All models show a significant average deviation from inventory. ► The year-to-year increment variation was best reproduced by the gap model. ► Complex models lose applicability due to extended input data needs.
