► We conducted a fine-grained content analysis of past and future simulations in SD. ► Episodic internal event details showed a striking past>future effect in SD. ► SD patients' external event details, in contrast, showed a future>past effect. ► Experiential ratings were equivalent across past and future conditions in SD. ► Recasting of past events produces similar subjective experiences during future thinking.
