TG-MS-FTIR study on pyrolysis behavior of superfine pulverized coal

Superfine pulverized coal as a new energy utilization method plays a significant role in alleviating pollutant emissions. The devolatilization behavior of superfine pulverized coal during pyrolysis was examined using TG-MS-FTIR. Gaseous products and mass loss were measured simultaneously. The results detected by MS are in good consistency with those obtained from FTIR. Mass loss is mainly caused by the release of moisture, decomposition of macromolecular, and polycondensation of aromatic. And NMG coal, with lower degree of coalification, has larger weight loss than HN coal. The main gaseous products are light hydrocarbons, such as small molecular alkane and unsaturated hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen. For both coals, as the particle size decrease, the release rate of CH4 increases initially then decreases. In addition, the influence of particle size and coal rank on the release characteristic of gaseous products is discussed in the work. The results provide new insights into the effect of particle size on gaseous products during pyrolysis, and are helpful for studying the variation of physicochemical properties during the comminution process.
