Alterations of red blood cell metabolome during cold liquid storage of erythrocyte concentrates in CPD-SAGM

► HPLC-Q-TOF-based untargeted metabolomics was performed on stored RBC concentrates. ► We observed a rapid fall of glycolytic rate and accumulation of end products. ► Metabolism shifted towards the oxidative phase of pentose phosphate pathway. ► Oxidative stress was exacerbated in RBCs and supernatants. ► Metabolism proceeded from PPP towards purine salvage pathway.
