Fabrication of nanostructured tool steel layer by combination of laser cladding and friction stir processing

► A nanostructured tool steel layer can be fabricated. ► The size and shape of the carbide particles in the clad layer can be controlled. ► The FSPed clad layer shows the high microhardness of ~900 HV.
