Improvement of thermal shock resistance for thermal barrier coating on aluminum alloy with various electroless interlayers

► NiCoCrAlY/8YSZ was deposited on a unconventional substrate. ► Electroless nickel alloys were used as the interlayers. ► Failure mechanisms with or without the interlayers were clarified. ► The thermal shock lifetime and bonding strength were largely improved.
