New sources of lycopsamine-type pyrrolizidine alkaloids and their distribution in Apocynaceae

• Nineteen species of Apocynaceae were tested for pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs).
• Seventeen species were tested for the first time.
• Lycopsamine type PAs are present in Echites umbellatus and Parsonsia oligantha.
• This is the first report of PAs in floral nectar.
• PAs are detectable in 13 year old dried leaves stored at room temperature.
