How scientific knowledge informs community understanding of groundwater
چکیده انگلیسی

SummaryRobust information is integral to any good decision-making process. Information needs to be seen as credible by the community and defensible by scientists and independent reviewers. To achieve the water planning outcomes of the National Water Initiative, we need a common understanding of the issues, informed and supported by both research-based scientific expertise and local experiential knowledge of the resource system and risks of changes to the consumptive pool, to return overdrawn water systems to environmentally sustainable levels of extraction. In addition, recognition of regional differences, Indigenous needs, and impacts of land-use and climate change are required. We focus on how participatory approaches of interpretation and communication of scientific knowledge about groundwater hydrology can assist communities’ understanding and acceptance of the need for better management.

► Participatory inclusive methods were used in co-production of knowledge.
► Visual models enhanced understanding of complex groundwater systems.
► Expert, community and government collaboration contributed to acceptance of science.
► Tools must reflect the purpose of engagement and needs of the community.
