► The mouse medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) may not play a role in effort-based decision making. ► Lesions of the mouse medial prefrontal cortex result in a reduction in anxiety-like behaviour. ► A potential species difference exists in the function of the mPFC in rats and mice in the effort-based decision making.
