Initial formation of calcite crystals in the thin prismatic layer with the periostracum of Pinctada fucata

► Initial state of calcite crystals in the prismatic layer was observed. ► Thin calcite crystal (thickness is about 1 μm) was formed on the periostracum. ► In the periostracum, the small particles of bassanite crystals were aggregated.
