The microstructure and mechanical behavior of a titanium-to-stainless steel dissimilar joint with a characteristic Ti(base)/TiAg/Ag-rich solid solution/stainless steel(base) layered structure were investigated under tensile loading. Elastic deformation in the layered joint structure occurred under the isostress condition observed in multi-phase materials, and the elastic interaction stresses were readily generated at the interphase boundaries to maintain strain continuity. This elastic interaction retarded mechanical yielding in the Ag-rich solid solution layer, thereby leading to the high joint strength. After yielding, the plastic deformation was mostly concentrated on the Ag-rich solid solution layer, and the final fracture proceeded in a ductile mode.
